I went out today for a quick 9 with a buddy. Took the early 90’s Macgregor combo iron set and Cleveland Classic persimmon woods. Shot a ho-hum 43 and my iron and bunker play was awful. I did use the Cleveland Classic TC-15 driver I got from Dick here on the forum to finally carry the creek on hole #2 at my club. It’s 230 yards to carry and I‘ve never carried it before with a persimmon until today. My Mac M09, Penna Super Eye-O-Matic, and Stan Thompson blonde custom drivers all failed. The Cleveland TC-15 had a graphite shaft and I smoked it 20 yards past the creek. I was so pumped but overall pretty unhappy with my play.
After dinner I went out and played 4 more holes but instead took the 1958 Wilson Dynapowered irons with my Mac fairway woods, same Cleveland driver though. Had a much better time striking the Wilson’s. They are really money clubs. Went Par, Bogey, Par, Par for the 4 holes. I really should play these all the time, only thing stopping me is my ego. 135 yard 7-iron is a bit of turn off, although second shot on the first hole of a long Par 4 was my 2-iron from 195 and ended up just short. Up and down for par. Don’t get to hit a 2-iron with my more modern Mac’s.
Love the 58’s, no finer set of irons. I’m really digging the Wilson Triple Duty wedge too.
So, how was your latest round with a vintage bag of sticks?
