So after digging out the1952 Powerbilt wood set a few weeks ago and spending more and more time hitting them, I decided I needed to find a matching iron set to play with them. I wanted to find a set with the original Powerbilt Golf Pride grips, just like the woods. I found this set of 1949 Powerbilt 8990 irons. They are a perfect match with the woods with both the same grips as well as the same True Temper Dynamic stiff shafts.
Irons are diggers with the sharp leading edge and no bounce, but they are surprisingly long.

Check out those grips. Golf Pride rubber and cork grips vulcanized unto the shaft.

The 8990 DTC irons were on page 1 of the 1949 Powerbilt catalog. I’m assuming these were top of the line.

The model 500 woods are deep faced.

Now you'll need to get a putter and the balata golf balls to match.
Good looking irons. Where did you go to find these? I noticed there are more vintage golf clubs come from warmer region, like California, Florida, Arizona.......
These irons came from Arizona via eBay. Pictures in the listing were pretty low res so it was a little bit of a gamble but using my H&B catalog book I was able to look them up prior to purchase. Knowing they were stainless I figured there was a good chance they were still in good shape.
The shafts might collect condensation from the temperature change in the desert climate. About the only thing you'll need to check when you get it in your hands.
It reminds me of some of my father's golf clubs but still more modern than the Macgregor muscle back.
It's very rare to have the original grips on it, most the sets from the age probably have the N's set of grips on it already.
